Two
years ago, I was working as a server at Gamekeeper's Tavern in
Chagrin Falls. Chagrin Falls is Tim Conway's hometown and is
a great walk around town community.
One night I was among the last servers still working and I noticed
a familiar looking gentleman walk into The Inn of Chagrin Falls,
which is owned by the same proprietors who operate Gamekeeper's.
At first I thought the guy was someone I waited on earlier in the
evening, but when he walked through the connecting dining room
into the main dining room, I realized the man was Tim Conway.
None of my coworkers had any interest in waiting on another table
at such a late hour since the kitchen was closed. I thought
that since I was at work, it wouldn't hurt to wait on Mr. Conway
and his hometown friends - even if they wanted to just visit over
a few cocktails. The bar at Gamekeeper's is fairly small and
usually very crowded. (they also have some great bartenders - so
if you're ever in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, stop in!)
After a painless couple of rounds, Mr. Conway's party asked for
the check. When Mr. Conway insisted on taking the check
despite another guest demanding the check, I found myself in bit
of a dilemma as to who to present the check to.
Mr. Conway solved my dilemma by saying "No, no young man, I
asked you for the check and you'll either give me the check or
your pants right here at the table - now which is it going to
be?"
After the laughter died down at the table, I looked at Mr. Conway
and said "well I'm keeping my pants on - so I guess that
means you get the check." I was a bit more disappointed
that my reply didn't draw the same amount of laughter from the
table that Mr. Conway did - but this was a home game for him after
all. To sum it all up, a pleasant guy, decent tip and maybe
an hour longer at work than it looked like.
